What is the MPA?

The Malaysian Photobook Archive (MPA) is a record of photobooks from across the country. Initiated in early-2022 by Photobookclub KL (a photobook appreciation group) and Zontiga (a creative hub for photography enthusiasts), the titles in this living document were compiled through personal acquisition and photobook submissions to the MPA for documentation purposes. As such, the MPA does not hold all the physical photobooks listed in this catalogue.

The MPA aims to be an invaluable resource in exploring Malaysian photography—past and present—whilst shedding light on the country’s rich photographic heritage. Through this archive, we hope to increase awareness and appreciation of the works of Malaysian photographers, and encourage the development of the photobook culture in Malaysia.

At present, the MPA catalogue is updated on a yearly basis. We strive to refine our categorisation and cataloguing of Malaysian photobooks, thus the record will continue to evolve over the years.

The newest version of the MPA (Volume II) is free to view online. A physical copy and the high resolution digital versions are available for purchase, and the funds received will go towards the operation of the MPA.
